With a landscape marked by its location between the Arestal mountain range, the Fílveda River (which has a waterfall), and the enclosed valley, other hallmarks of Vilarinho de S. Roque are terraced agriculture and a forest area dotted with eucalyptus and pine trees. In fact, the entire history of the place, whose first reference dates back to the 16th century, is linked to the river, the watermills for grinding corn, and the verdant forests. All the village’s traditions are rooted in the well-preserved rurality and popular culture of the area.
Pateira de Frossos
Located in the heart of the Lower Vouga Lagoon, the Pateira de Frossos features a biodiversity typical of the Aveiro Lagoon system, which is sustained by the geographical and hydrographic complexity of its intricate network of channels. With a unique landscape of great importance for migratory birds, the Pateira de Frossos stands out for its great diversity and ecological value, which is imperative to know, protect, publicize, and preserve. The agricultural lands that compose it form a complex agricultural mosaic that shelters a vast natural heritage of unique beauty. In this freshwater ecosystem, rich in avifauna, you can find an impressive variety of species, such as the little egret (Egretta garzetta), the purple heron (Ardea purpurea), the grey heron (Ardea cinerea), the Western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus), the osprey (Pandion haliaetus), the hen harrier (Circus cyaneus), the great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), the common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), the Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), the Savi’s warbler (Locustella luscinioides), and the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). This landscape is characterized by the division of the rural space into small agricultural "plots" delimited by hedges of various tree species like Willows (Salix sp.), Alders (Alnus glutinosa), and Oaks (Quercus robur), and shrub species, like Elderberries (Sambucus nigra), as well as by ditches that may or may not carry water. What makes the Bocage so special in ecological terms is its multiplicity of habitats: the fact that agricultural, forest, and aquatic spaces exist in the same place provides living beings with a variety of environmental conditions, such as food and shelter, which in turn attracts a larger and more diverse set of species from almost all groups. For those who venture to explore the Bocage, this is a landscape of unique beauty that provides walks in a rural environment with an unmistakable smell of the sea due to the proximity of the Ria de Aveiro and the beaches, and which is proof of the positive impact that traditional rural spaces can have on biodiversity.
